Thanks to grant support from RN-Vankor, scientists from the V.N. Forest Institute Sukachev created a digital map of the main types of vegetation cover of the Taimyr Peninsula. Using modern remote sensing and GIS technologies, biologists mapped the tundra and analyzed climatic, biotic and anthropogenic factors. Such research is especially important in the context of a changing climate and Arctic development.

The data obtained indicate an increase in the productivity of the vegetation cover of Taimyr, including the territory along the Arctic coast. Greening the tundra helps expand the food supply of reindeer, and also confirms the ability of the vegetation cover to regenerate itself. In addition, the study recorded a reduction in the area of water bodies in Taimyr by 6% over the past 20 years, which indicates a change in the hydrological regime in the Arctic zone under the influence of global warming.

The Taimyr Peninsula is the summer migration area for the bulk of the wild reindeer population. In addition, the main population of domestic reindeer is located in Western Taimyr – about 120 thousand individuals. Changes in the productivity of the tundra vegetation cover, the main food supply of these animals, temperature and water regimes affect the state of the population, which ultimately affects the number of wild and domestic reindeer as the main bioindicator species of the Russian Arctic and the key economic animal of the peoples of the North.

The main priority in the Company’s work is caring for the environment, preserving local ecosystems and careful use of natural resources. In the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Rosneft is implementing the greenest project in the oil industry, Vostok Oil. Already at the design stage, the most advanced environmental technologies were taken into account. During the operation of the enterprise in the region, RN-Vankor has implemented about 150 environmental, social and grant projects and programs.

The results of the first competition for grants in support of scientific research of practical importance for the Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets region of the Krasnoyarsk Territory were summed up at the EcoArctic forum, which was organized for the first time in Taimyr by RN-Vankor.

The purpose of the competition is to contribute to the solution of socially significant problems for the territory of ancestral residence of the indigenous peoples of the North, the development of scientific knowledge about the territory, the preservation of its biological diversity, and the support of the traditional way of life of the local population.

Research teams from leading universities in Siberia, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and state nature reserves took part in the RN-Vankora grant program. In total, more than 20 projects were submitted to the grant competition.
